Now if you have curly hair you know or at least should know that you should be clarifying your hair at least once a month. Us curly hair gals apply products like leave ins, creams, mousses, gels, sometimes hairspray. All of that buildup throughout the weeks needs to be removed. You may be thinking, “Doesn’t shampoo do that?” Well, shampooing your hair cleanses your hairs, but clarifying reboots your hair/scalp potentially solving issues like dry hair, flakey scalp, frizzy and weighed down hair. It’s like a deep cleanser that really gets in there to remove all the gunk and residue.
What Kind Of Clarifying Shampoo To Use
Now that we got that out of the way, the question is, which clarifying shampoos do we use? You can use a clarifying shampoo with sulfates but no silicones. The reason is, sulfates are a cleansing agent that breaks down oil. The trick is to not use it too often because it can be drying to the hair. We want to stay away from the silicones in a clarifying shampoo because it blocks moisture from your hair which is a big no when you have curly hair as you want bouncy moisturized curls.
Another option is to use a sulfate free clarifying shampoo if you are worried about your hair becoming dry from sulfates. There are a bunch of sulfate free shampoos that are more gentle while still removing buildup effectively. Also, it’ll make sure your hair doesn’t lose its moisture.
Whether you prefer sulfates or no sulfates in your clarifying shampoo, both options are recommended below!
Best Clarifying Shampoo For Curly Hair
Clarifying Shampoos That Contain Sulfates
1. Aveda – Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo
Honestly this brand has some pretty good hits when it comes to hair care. This one in particular is a great example of a clarifying shampoo that just works. It deep cleanses your hair gently without sucking your hair dry of moisture. Because of this, you will be left with a refreshed scalp and your hair will feel comfortable and clean with shine that lasts for days
2. Christophe Robin – Brightening Shampoo With Camomile And Cornflower
This one is great for all types of hair but especially for those with color treated hair. It was made with dyed hair in mind because the camomile and cornflower in it is supposed to brighten and improve your tone so you won’t have to worry about it stripping your hair. Not only that, but once you cleanse with shampoo even if you don’t have dyed hair, you’ll still get the clean reset feeling with lots of life and volume.
3. Twist By Ouidad – Hit Reset Light Clarifying Shampoo
Since we are on the topic of curls and clarifying, this shampoo is amazing because it provides almost like a bouncier version of your normal curls. Of course clarifying shampoos should give a good bounce back, however there’s a bit of an umpf with this one. It also does a great job at taming that pesky frizz while also giving your hair a light volumized feel that is smooth to the touch. What more could you want? It’s a yes for me!
4. Bumble and Bumble – Sunday Clarifying Shampoo
If you are looking for a no fuss clarifying shampoo that does that job and does it well might I add, this is the one for you. It’s great for all hair types and textures and effectively removes unwanted residue and buildup. It gives that squeaky feeling without that dry tight feeling. Greasy weighed down hair, be gone!
Clarifying Shampoos Without Sulfates
1. Curlsmith – Wash And Scrub Detox Pro-Biotic
Listen, I don’t know what sorcery is in this but it’s damn good. What I believe it is is the exfoliating particles. Unlike traditional clarifying shampoos where the texture is just your standard liquid, this one contains micro-fine particles that that work to exfoliate and clarify. Because of this, you feel like you’re getting the clean you get when you go to the hair dresser. It feels professionally cleansed and like you are truly starting from square one where your hair just feels brand new. You have to get your hands on this!
2. Bounce Curl – Gentle Clarifying Shampoo
It’s all about the bounce girl! This is such a great option for those with finer hair textures because gently cleanses while also adding volume and texture without stripping your hair. You know if you have fine hair it can get challenging to achieve voluminous defined curls that aren’t weighed down and this can fix that issue pretty quickly in one wash. Not to mention, it is packed with ingredients that strengthen your hair and keep it healthy, bouncy, and shiny.
3. Giovanni Eco Chic – Balanced Hydrating And Clarifying Shampoo
For you ladies who want a perfect balance between clarifying and hydrating, you need to try this one out! It’s the best of both worlds. It deep cleans your hair while also keeping it hydrated in the process. It’s gentle enough to use every time you wash your hair as well which is nice because you can be more certain your hair is fully cleanses for your style routine! You will have weightless fabulous hair in no time!
4. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
Okay so I couldn’t write this post without mentioning the wonder that an apple cider vinegar rinse can do. Yes the smell may be a bit pungent for some but it does not linger! The benefits to using this method are fantastic. It’s balances your pH levels, stimulates hair growth, helps reduce shedding, provides shine, and leaves your hair baby smooth.
How to make
Ingredients: Raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar, water, a bottle (preferably one with a nozzle for easy application)
Directions: Pour one part apple cider vinegar and two parts water in the bottle and wa la! You’ve got your apple cider vinegar rinse. It’s that easy
How To Use: Shampoo and condition your hair first and then use the apply the rinse close to the scalp using the nozzle. Be careful to not let it get into your eyes. Let it sit for the rest of your shower routine and then rinse out.
