Let’s not forget the countless curly hair products we have to sift through and test to find the perfect fit for our curl pattern. Co-washes, creams, lotions, gels, hairsprays, oils, you name it, we’ve probably tried them all.
It can definitely be a waiting game to finally achieve the juicy bouncy curls you’ve wished for but patience and consistency is key. Allowing yourself to test new ways of treating and styling your hair will only get you closer to your goal. These tips below will help you get those beautiful healthy curls faster that you’ll be confident about!
How To Achieve Bouncy Curls
1. Deep Condition With A Hair Mask
Hair masks are an essential when it comes to having healthy curls. If you have damaged, frizzy, or dry hair, a hair mask is going to be your best friend. Since deep conditioning penetrates the hair shaft, it is going to deeply moisturize your strands and strengthen and repair your hair. With consistent use once a week, you will see your hair being restored to its natural glory allowing your curls to looks healthier every time you style your hair.
Even if your hair isn’t damaged, dry, or frizzy, hair masking is still important to upkeep your curls and keep them looking beautifully bouncy at all times.
2. Use A Hair Oil
If you don’t use a hair oil, you’re doing it all wrong! Hair oils are amazing for multiple reasons. You can use oils like rosemary, amla, and castor oil to grow and strengthen your hair. Using just a few drops of each and massaging it into your scalp at least 3 times a week will stimulate hair growth. You can even add the oils to your favorite hair mask to enhance the benefits.
Another great way to use an oil is to break up the cast you would get with gel styling. Take a pump of jojoba oil and scrunch it throughout your hair after diffusing to reveal juicer fuller curls. This also seals in moisture and extends to longevity of your wash day results. You can also of course use it on your ends of your hair to prevent split ends.
3. Clump Your Hair
Ever wonder why your curls come out stringy and not defined or fuller? It’s because you are not styling them properly. When you get out of the shower with wet hair, instead of just scrunching in product right away, take the time to style it. First, apply your leave in conditioner or cream of choice. Then, split your hair into sections and take a wet detangling brush and brush each section from root to tip slightly curving the brush as your get to the end. Lastly you can gently shake that clump to get that curl to start forming. Finally you can go ahead and air dry to diffuse.
4. Finger Coil
For those with damaged curls, your strands may be looking a little wonky or limp. A great way to train your hair to curl is to finger coil. After you shampoo and condition, you take very small sections of your hair (about half an inch to an inch) and twirl them with your fingers from root to tip away from your scalp. Do this after you have applying to leave ins to avoid frizz.
This can be a little time consuming depending on the amount of hair you have, but the results are beautiful! If you find that your hair is drying by the time you get to the other half, just fill a spray bottle with water and you can easily wet your hair again.
5. Sleep On Silk
Where you lay your head at night, believe it or not contributes to how your hair will look the next day and how it will hold up. If you are using a cotton pillowcase, that causes friction and frizz resulting in messy curls when you wake up. Sleeping in silk not only elevates your slumber, but it doesn’t cause any tugging, tangles, and frizz. Your hair slips over the material smoothly allowing you to wake up without bedhead. You can also use a silk or satin bonnet to protect your curls as well.
6. Get Regular Trims
Getting regular trims are a must for naturally curly hair. When you cut the ends of your curls every 4-6 months, it gets rid of dead ends and allows your hair to almost spring back back to life a little. If you keep up with your hair cuts, there’s no way your hair won’t look healthy because eventually you’ll be free from the damaged parts.
A major tip tip when you are going for a trim, don’t go to your standard hair salon. Go to a curly specialist. They cut and style your hair in a strategic way that will make your curls look it’s best. Trust me you won’t regret it!
7. Pump Up The Volume
If your curls are lacking volume, there are easy ways to fix that! First you can flip your hair over and shake out the roots gently to make sure your hair isn’t sticking to your scalp. You can also use a hair pick and lift your hair from the roots that way. If you want to bring the volume to the next level, texture spray or dry shampoo works wonders! Just apply some of either directly onto your scalp and massage and shake it out upside down. When you flip back up you’ll have the voluminous curly hair.
