Let’s talk about hair. Hair frames our faces and can add that touch of femininity we enjoy. For us women, hair can be one of our favorite physical features but it can also be a struggle to maintain. The first day we style our style our hair it can look like we just stepped off a photoshoot but with our daily busy routines, that look can quickly wear off.
Not only can your style wear off, but with pollution, sweat, and various hair products all in the mix, things can definitely take a turn in the smell department. The freshly washed salon quality clean scent your hair once had has now dissipated into something not so inviting that’s making you self conscious.
You’re scanning your brain wondering how you can prevent this from happening next time but you just don’t know what went wrong in the first place. First of all, it happens to the best of us but second of all, you’re in the right place. Below are the absolute best tips to keep your hair smelling fresh and clean all the time!
How To Make Your Hair Smell Good
1. Use A Dry Shampoo
If you are someone who is constantly on the go or if you’re in a pinch, washing your hair is not always an option as it can be a time consuming task. This is where dry shampoo becomes your savior. Although it doesn’t cleanse as well as your standard shampoo, it soaks up excess oil and dirt so that your hair will be less dirty and will allow it to have more body. This in turn, removes some of that unwanted smell leaving you with cleaner hair.
2. Use Hair Perfume
In the same realm of things to use when you’re in a rush, hair perfume also comes in handy! If you’re not at home and your at work, or out hanging with the gals, you can quickly spritz your hair with hair perfume for a quick pick me up. This will make your hair smell good instantly for a few hours. It’s best to use a perfume specifically marketed for your hair because unlike your traditional perfume, hair perfumes contain a much lower percentage of alcohol which won’t dry out your hair.
3. Hair Products
This is a simple but effective way to get your hair to smell good. Make sure you use hair products like leave in conditioner, stylers, creams, etc., that smell good! Not every hair product smells nice. Some can actually smell rancid due to certain natural ingredients. You use products on your hair on a daily basis anyway so just make sure they have a nice scent to it that will make your hair smell fresh and clean.
4. Hair Masks
Hair masks are a great way to keep your hair smelling beautiful. Because you usually leave them in your hair from anywhere between 5 minutes to an hour, they have to sit in your hair longer than something like a shampoo where you quickly rinse it out. Leaving your hair mask in longer not only allows your hair to smell better for a longer period of time, but it nourishes and softens your strands allowing more manageability and cleanliness.
5. Be Aware Of Your Environment
Your environment or wherever your hair is exposed can certainly affect the aroma your hair gives off. The girl who’s in an environment filled with nature and cleaner air is going to smell better than the girl in the bustling city with crowded subways, construction, and traffic. Being out and about in a city all day is most likely going to give your hair a stench which is where the hair perfumes or dry shampoos come in handy.
Also if you’re in a bar that reeks of alcohol or close by smokers, that smell can get stuck in your hair. Just remember it’s important to be aware about your surroundings.
6. Internal Health
The things you put into your body internally and have an impact on your body externally. Consuming lots of foods with pungent smells like onions and garlic can cause that stench to seep out of the pores on your scalp and cause smelly hair. Drinking enough water and eating foods like pineapples, oranges, and celery will contribute to your hair scent and make it smell great.
7. Wash Your Hair Regularly
There comes a time where you just need to wash your hair completely. Too much hair products, dirt, sweat, and grime collect throughout your hair causes your hair to not smell good at all. Nothing but shampooing and conditioning will fix the situation. It’s best to wash your hair 1-2 times a week. Washing your hair everyday can strip your hair of its natural oils and leave you with brittle dry hair.
8. Clean Your Hair Tools
Your hair tools are constantly put through the wringer every time you style you hair. From creamy styling products, to sticky hairsprays, your hair tools have been in contact with them all. With all those products collecting on your brushes and combs, it’s bound to cause a not so pleasant smell and when you keep using those uncleaned tools, it can cause your hair and scalp to smell off-putting. Always make sure your brushes have been cleansed and disinfected.
9. Cut Down On Heat
At some point in our hair styling process, heat may be used to dry our hair. The problem with using too much heat on your hair or using consistent direct heat, can cause your hair to develop a burnt smell that can linger for a few hours or longer. You can lower the heat levels on your hot tools or air dry your hair if possible to prevent that burning smell.
10. Use A Silicone Shampoo Brush
The silicone shampoo brushes are possibly the best thing invented for hair care. Overtime, you start to get buildup on your scalp from various hair products, sweat, dead skin cells, and excess sebum. When that occurs, your hair starts to become smelly and it’s time to shampoo your scalp. Sure you can use your fingers to scrub your scalp but nothing beats a shampoo brush.
A shampoo brush gets rid of an itchy scalp quickly, and effectively exfoliates your scalp and stimulates hair growth better than any fingers could. You will get the best cleanse of your life using a shampoo brush.
