Your lips are a focal point. When others speak to you or look at you, they notice your lips, so caring for them is a must. This time of year it can be particularly difficult to upkeep the state of your lips because of the weather. Rain, sleet, snow, and freezing temperatures can do a number them and cause dry chapped lips.
Usually, the first thing you would reach for are your standard lip balms you’ve been using the months prior during the warmer season. You’re expecting that it will keep your lips plump and hydrated, only to find out it’s doing the exact opposite. That’s because as the seasons change, our beauty routine should be tweaked as well.
The tricks that worked one season aren’t necessarily going to work the next. You’re in good hands though because I’ve got some tips that will get your lips refined, smooth, and kissable! Just in time for cuffing season. 😉
Lip Care Routine Tips
1. Exfoliate
Exfoliating your lips is an integral step in making sure your lips feel and look healthy. Notice when your lips are chapped, you get the dreaded peeling and flakiness. In this case, just applying a lip balm isn’t going to make it go away. In fact, it’s going to make the situation worse because you’re allowing more dead skin cells to occur and neglecting the issue at hand. You need to exfoliate!
Take you favorite lip scrub, or even make it a DIY project and mix equal parts sugar and honey and rub it on your lips in circular motions for about 30 seconds, and then rinse it off with warm water. The results are smooth and refined lips!
2. Lip Mask
Sometimes your lips need a burst of moisture and hydration. That’s where lip masks come in. Just like you use face masks, think of the same for your lips. They’re usually thicker in consistency and best used at night because it may look and feel too heavy on your lips in the day. They’re such a staple for those colder months because it works overtime and deeply nourishes so that you wake up with a plump pout!
3. Lip Balms
Just because lips balms may not be as effective as a lip mask, definitely don’t count them out. You still need some type of moisture throughout the day to beat the dryness. The magic comes when you apply lip balm after a night of exfoliation and using a lip mask. It’s a triple threat! It’s taking your lip care routine to the next level. Applying a moisturizing lip balm on an every day basis will allow you achieve healthy lips all the time.
4. Stay Hydrated
What we put into our bodies translates to our outer appearance. Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated is an important step in our lip care routine. If you’re dehydrated, it could cause dry lips and you can develop fine lines on and around your lips which make you look like you’re aging rapidly. Not only will your lips benefits from from drinking water, but your skin will too!
5. Shower With Lukewarm Water
I know, I know. When we’ve been out in freezing temperatures, all we want to do is come back and take the hottest shower known to mankind. However, I strongly urge you not to do that. Not only are you causing your skin to become red and irritated from the heat, but it’s not doing your dry lips any favors. If anything, you’re worsening the situation because it’s stripping your lip from their natural oils further causing flaking or sensitivity.
6. It’s All About The Color
Now that your lips are looking beautifully smooth and rejuvenated, let’s take this a step further. Applying the right lip color just makes completes you lip care routine nicely. The goal is to have the perfect nude shade for your skin tone. This is because it enhances your natural lip color and doesn’t look like you tried too hard. (Nothing wrong with that by the way but we’re going for a beautifully natural look) Dark deep colors can come off too harsh or look artificial. A nude or nude-pinkish shade is going to look the best and make your lips look more full and kissable.
