What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is simply shaving your face. You know that peach fuzz that gets in the way of your flawless makeup application or that’s especially annoying above your top lip? Yepp, all of it gets nipped.
When you visit your esthetician, they can do this procedure. They take a single blade scalpel and gently remove all the peach fuzz from your face. This technique is used for exfoliation purposes and to remove dead skin cells and debris from your skin resulting in brighter, smoother skin.
Benefits Of Dermaplaning
1. Immediate Results
Most of the time when you get a procedure done, you’re told by your esthetician that you need to come back for several sessions to get the full desired result. With dermaplaning, the results are instant. Because our face is exposed to all the elements on a daily basis it catches bacteria and debris throughout the day potentially causing irritation. Once that top layer is removed, it reveals smoother and rejuvenated skin.
2. Less Downtime
A great plus about dermaplaning is that there is very little to no downtime! Because it just feels like your face is being shaved, it’s non-invasive. You’re not getting pricked and prodded or getting a chemical peel, so once you are done you can go on about your day like normal with brightened smooth skin with almost no irritation.
3. Exfoliates
Usually when you think of exfoliating, you may think of scrubs, or chemical exfoliators . However, when you dermaplane, that is another form of exfoliation as well. Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation procedure that gently removes the top layer of your skin resulting in healthier, more youthful looking skin that’s soft for days.
4. Increases Skincare Efficacy
Because that peach fuzz and those dead skin cells were kicked to curb, you’re in for a treat! Having those pesky hairs and cells removed, gets rid of any blockage and allows for better absorption of your skin care products. This allows them to perform better and do their job more efficiently.
5. Diminishes The Look Of Fine Lines And Wrinkles
When we dermaplane and remove dead skin, it increases the cell turnover rate. This means that the dead cells are being removed so that the new cells can grow faster to produce smoother looking skin. In doing so, this reduces the look of fine and wrinkles and gives you an overall more youthful look.
6. Makeup Applies Smoother
Usually if you don’t dermaplane, you put on your makeup and it looks pretty decent but throughout the day those creases and patchiness plague you. However, when you do dermaplane, those hairs are out of the way so you have a much smoother canvas to work with allowing your makeup to look more airbrushed and decrease the chances of creasing throughout the day.
7. Prevents Breakouts
Throughtout the day, your face is exposed to toxins, bacteria, and dirt and all of that accumulates on your skin. Mix all of that with sebum and dead skin cells and you got yourself a breakout. Dermaplaning removes all of that so the chances of you getting a breakout decreases, while the chances of your skin glowing increases.
Can You Wear Makeup After Dermaplaning?
So the big question of “Can you wear makeup after dermaplaning?” Honestly, The answer is yes but not right after and I’ll tell you why.
The rule of thumb is to wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup. This is because you just revealed new skin cells so applying makeup straight away can reclog your pores. Being that there is very little downtime after a dermaplaning session, many can get away with wearing makeup after 24 hours. However, those with extra sensitive skin may need to wait longer because sometimes irritation and redness can occur but will usually go away within a few days.
You can wear mascara and eye makeup right after but stay away from the makeup that is going directly on your face like foundation, concealer, blush, highlighter, etc.
What You Should Do After Dermaplaning
1. Wear Sunscreen
You should be wearing sunscreen every day to protect yourself from skin cancer. However, this is especially important after dermaplaning because you just removed the top layer of your skin. When you remove dead skin cells and reveal new ones that haven’t been exposed to the elements, this puts your skin at a higher risk for sun damage.
2. Avoid Actives
Avoiding actives means avoiding any skin care products that are potent. This includes Vitamin C, AHA’s, BHA’s, and Retinols/Retinoids. The reason being is that since your new skin is freshly revealed, those active ingredients can inflame, burn, or irritate it.
Stick to mild skin care products like a gentle cleanser and moisturizer that protects your skin barrier.
3. Avoid High Heat Temperatures
Since we you are trying to avoid anything that can inflame or irritate your skin, you want to avoid high heat situations. This includes things like working out, laying out on the beach, saunas, hot showers, or any activity that will cause sweating. Doing this ensures that you will recover fully within the 24-hour time frame.
4. Refrain From Exfoliation
Because you just exfoliated your skin through dermaplaning, you should avoid any other types of exfoliation for at least the next 5-7 days. This means no scrubs, chemical exfoliants, or chemical peels. Over exfoliating can damage your skin barrier and cause itchiness, discoloration, inflammation, and infections.
