Curly hair comes in all shapes and sizes and can definitely vary in definition or hydration from each wash day but sometimes it can turn out flatter than expected. That big hair you wanted to achieve seems unachievable after you have styled your hair. However, not all hope is lost.
Just because your curls are already styled or dried and set, doesn’t mean that you can’t create volume. Any curl type can add volume to your hair even if you have fine hair. Below are the best tips and tricks to achieve more volume for any hair type.
How To Volumize Curly Hair
1. Use A Hair Pick
When your hair has already dried and you feel like you are missing volume at your roots, using a hair pick is a great way to solve that problem. You can just take the pick and pick at your hair at the roots to lift any stuck hairs away from the scalp. This simple trick will make your hair appear more voluminous.
If you want to take it up a notch and have even more significant volume, spray some hairspray on your hair pick and then pick at your roots. This will allow your hair to stay voluminous for a longer period of time. Always try to opt for an alcohol-free hair spray so that you won’t dry out your curls.
2. Style Away From Your Scalp
While your hair is still wet when you are styling your hair, a great way to get volume is to style your hair away from your scalp. This means that if you brush style your curls, take your hair and style it in the opposite direction of your scalp in an upwards motion. This allows your hair to not get stuck to your scalp in the initial process of styling
If you don’t brush style your hair and just scrunch or rake in product, you can style your wet hair with your head upside down. This will also give the same volumizing effect as brush styling away from your head.
3. Use Texture Spray
Using a texture spray is an easy way to get root volume. For those days when your curls fall flat and need a bit of a pick-me-up, texture spray works like a charm. It adds a second-day grit to your hair that gives a bit of a sexy bedhead look without ruining your curl pattern. Just spray some on your roots, rub it in, and watch it start creating volume for days.
4. Root Clipping
Root clipping is a tried and true way of achieving volume on curly hair. While your hair is still wet and after you have applied your products, you can take a root clip and place it on the sections of your roots that you want to see volume.
You can air dry your hair with the roots in and once it’s dry you can gently remove them. If you want maximum volume though, you would diffuse your hair while the root clips are in place. The method of using root clips helps to train your strands to not lose volume.
5. Brush Through Wet Curl Clumps
When we are styling our hair, it’s ideal to create curl clumps so that our hair doesn’t come out stringy or frizzy. When we do that, sometimes we can lose volume because our curls are stuck together.
A way to prevent that is to take a wide tooth comb after you have applied your styling products and brush it gently through your curl clumps to separate them. This trick allows the final result of your hair to look fuller and more volumized.
6. Separate Curls
Just like there’s a way to separate curl clumps when it’s wet, you can also separate them when your hair is dry. Once you are left with dry hair and you see big curl clumps, apply a drop or 2 of your favorite hair oil on your hands, and with your fingers separate your curls.
An easy way to do this is by taking a big curl clump and seeing where there’s a space that looks like it can be pulled apart. Gently unravel the curl from the clump and do this for all of the clumps to achieve beautiful voluminous curls.
