If you’re anything like me and love beauty, you can sometimes fall victim to the marketing of all the new up-and-coming products and develop shiny object syndrome. Because it’s something new and exciting, we want to purchase the best next thing right away. In some ways, it’s great because we can find our holy grails that way but in other ways, we end up neglecting what we already have. In turn, we end up with an overflowing stash of makeup products that we don’t even need and it becomes overwhelming and wasteful.
It’s time to strip it back and not succumb to the pressures of needing it all because no you don’t need that glittery eyeshadow that you’ll only wear once and then let collect dust for the rest of its days. Below are the only beauty essentials you need in your makeup bag.
Essential Beauty Products
1. Skin Prep
With any great makeup look comes great skin prep underneath. If you have dry skin and apply makeup on top of that without properly moisturizing or hydrating the skin, your makeup will become flakey and start creasing. If you have oily skin and don’t use the proper moisturizer or primer that regulates the oil, your makeup will eventually separate and slip and slide all over your skin.
During the day, you want to also remember to apply your sunscreen or SPF for its anti-aging skin care benefits as well. This is why it’s essential to either prep by doing your skincare routine or use the correct makeup primer to have protected skin with a flawless finish that lasts all day.
2. Foundation/ Base Product
No makeup look is complete without a base product that evens out your skin tone and covers redness. Depending on the type of coverage you like, you can have a full coverage foundation for a more glam look or a tinted moisturizer for a more natural look. Either one works as long as it meets your coverage needs. You can even have one of each if you like both types of finishes for different occasions.
3. Concealer
Concealers are a must for those that have darker spots or blemishes that need that extra bit of coverage. Foundation can only cover so much but when you need to lighten areas like dark circles or acne scars, because of the thicker nature of a concealer, it will do the trick! You can even use concealer to highlight the high points on your face such as the tops of your cheeks or your cupid’s bow if it’s about 2 shades lighter than your normal shade.
4. Mascara
Having a good mascara in your makeup bag enhances your overall makeup look and makes your eyes pop. It can darken, lift, and volumize your lashes giving you that feminine touch. Depending on your goals for how you want your lashes to look, you can choose a mascara that provides length, volume, or both.
5. Eyebrow Enhancer
Enhancing your eyebrows is an important part of a makeup look because they frame your face. There are various types of eyebrow products. An eyebrow gel will help you fill in and shape your eyebrows while giving some hold to keep them in place. You can also choose an eyebrow pomade or pencil where you have more freedom to fill in sparse areas without filling in unwanted sections. Lastly, you can use an eyebrow powder that gives you a softer appearance.
6. Blush
Once you finished your base makeup, you can easily look flat or one-dimensional without adding some color to the face. Blush is perfect for that! It creates a youthful effect and gives that image of a fresh lively look. It makes it look like you’ve been kissed by the sun on a bright summer morning! Pick the color blush that makes you happiest!
7. Lip Product
Now for the final perfect touch! No makeup look is complete with dry or uncolored lips. If you are more of a minimalist kind of girl, you can definitely get away with just applying lip balm or lip gloss so that your lips don’t look crusty. If you are more of a glam queen, don’t forget a lipstick that compliments the rest of your makeup for a cohesive finish.
